Wensleydale Dental Practice can restore your smile and replace those missing teeth with the use of the Straumann dental implant system. With more than 20 years of clinical research that have resulted in over 3,000 independent scientific publications, Straumann offer the most extensively documented, clinically validated and practice-proven implant system on the market, this is why it is the implant of choice for the practice.

There are a number of different implant systems available to suit all requirements, so whether you require a bone level rebuild or a soft tissue level implant, there's a Straumann implant that's prefect for the job in hand.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth which looks and feels like the real thing, when used, only you will know it's not one of your original teeth. It is made up of 3 main parts, the root, a securing post and the replacement tooth itself.

What is the procedure for having an implant?

At the consultation your dentist will talk you through the treatment and discuss the options available.  You will then have some x-rays taken to determine the shape and quality of the bone and some impressions for study casts to allow your dentist to check for nearby anatomical structures and plan the treatment.

We will send you a full treatment plan in the post, with all procedures and costs fully explained.  When you agree to have the treatment carried out you will come in and see us for the placement of implants. At this stage a titanium rod is inserted into the jaw and then allowed to fuse with the bone. The titanium is extremely tissue friendly and the bone grows onto the titanium surface. This is called osseointegration.  We normally allow the implant to fuse with the bone without load for about 12 weeks, for the bone tissue to form a strong bond with the implant.

Once the initial healing and anchoring has taken place you would need to return to the practice and have a post attached to your new implant.  At this point a temporary crown will be fitted to allow the gum line to adjust to having a new tooth in place. Approximately 4 to 6 weeks later you would once again return to the practice at which time your temporary crown will be removed and your new permanent tooth will be fitted to the implant.
